In 2019, there were 9,971 registered hotels operating in Greece, offering 433,689 rooms and 856,347 beds.

The Institute of the Federation of Greek Tourism Enterprises (INSETE) recently published a detailed report comparing short-term holiday rentals on platforms such as Airbnb with licensed hotel beds. The study is available for free on the website of INSETE, here.
According to the INSETE report, the number of available short-term rental beds in some regions were greater than hotel beds. The available beds in holiday rental facilities were distributed accordingly:
73% in the Cyclades islands
69% in Attica
66% in Peloponnese
54% in Ionian islands
52% in Thessaly.
Out of 179,000 short-term rental properties listed in Greece
89% were independent properties
2% hotel rooms
9 % private rooms in a shared house or apartment
As the INSETE Report states
“Short-term property rentals are no longer exclusively an activity of exploiting unused resources for a little extra income, but on the contrary, with the professional management and utilization of relevant sharing platforms, is an activity that plays an important role in shaping the country’s tourism product, especially in key tourist areas such as the Cyclades, Attica and the Ionian, where available beds for short-term rental potentially exceed beds on offer by hotels.”
